MIT School of Architecture's Dean Stepping Down

Having held the position of Dean at MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) for the past ten years, Adele Naude Santos has announced that she will be stepping down at the end of this semester. Santos was the second woman to hold the position and the ninth Dean since the initiation of the school.

During her time as Dean, the SA+P has seen applications for various programmes rise dramatically, with submissions to the Master’s Program in the Media Lab’s Media Arts and Sciences and the Master of Architecture programme both doubling, applications to the Master of Sciences in Architecture Studies rising by 85% and submissions to the Master in City Planning rising by 70%.

MIT President L. Rafael Reif said of Santos: “I arrived at MIT just as the Media Lab was taking off. In the 30 years since, the School of Architecture and Planning has continually renewed itself to stay on the cutting edge.

“Dean Santos brought to the role her considerable gifts as an architect and administrator, but we will always be most grateful for her remarkable eye for talent. She brought SA+P to greater prominence - even as the global financial crisis hit at the midpoint of her tenure. I am very proud of her accomplishments.”
