Gensler Designed SFO Airport T2 Achieved LEED Gold

Gensler's sustainable renovation of San Francisco International Airport has achieved LEED Gold certification making it the first airport in the US to be awarded the title. Opened to the public in April 2011 the regeneration of the existing 640,000 sq ft Terminal 2 (SFO T2) building is not only environmentally-friendly in the services it provides but looks to educate the six million passengers that pass through annually on issues of sustainability.

Intelligent design has ensured that the terminal saves 15% more than the energy cost of a terminal designed to meet California's building codes and in reusing a considerable amount of infrastructure in the original structure in the renovation process, the global warming impact of the terminal is reduced by approximately 12,300 tonnes of CO2. Additional elements that helped the project win LEED Gold status include Hydration Stations which allow passengers to refill plastic water bottles past security checkpoints to reduce the number of units thrown away and creative signage to educate the building's users on issues of sustainability.

Sir Richard Branson, Founder of the Virgin Group which owns one of two airlines which use the renewed terminal, explained: "Virgin is known around the world for its focus on sustainability as well as for product innovation that improves the customer experience, and SFO's T2 represents the future of airport experiences across the globe. Virgin America has the most fuel-efficient fleet in the US and thanks to the vision of SFO and Gensler, it now has a home base that reflects the evolution of sustainable travel." The terminal was built in a design-build partnership between Turner Construction and Gensler for San Francisco International Airport.
